City Centres and Flower Pressers….
28/05/2008
Newcastle Central
Between this and Edinburgh from, say, top of Calton Hill, the two share similarities. Namely in colour, materials, density etc. But its all pretty general:- Im looking for specifics, detailed similarities, blueprints….
Was coming home from work tonight on the bus and the guy in front of me was on his phone and he said to whoever he was talking to “All these big cities look the same anyway though…”
Smirked to myself like a fool…..Hope he’s right…..

On Another Note…
Im thinking of pressing flowers- I think it could work in the simple, gemoetric drawings. Either that, or something like a really naff floral print on a curtain or a duvet cover, cut to the dimensions that are specific to the space in question…if that makes sense.
Theres a point to it though (honest). I think that it, and other objects for that matter, could be used in place of the photographs tat I tend to fall back on when drawing. My hope is that by breaking the elements of the image down to their simplest forms and finding something that signifies it, it’l give it something new and push the drawings forward…..maybe?…..
It might be really crap, but I think it could work if done right; Might need to wait until the end of next week though.
Sorry if I seem to be talkin a good game (debatable), I feel like theres a bunch of stuff I wanna try to get this thing off the ground but seen as how we’re still in s state of Telford limbo and Berlin’s just around the corner, I’m a little bit off kilter on the TED front… So I’ve kinda been using this as a notebook to remember everything, but I do have every intention of making a proper fist of it as of next Friday….look at me, like I got a bayin crowd and shit….

Some stuff leading up to ESW show…..

Alright…
I have been thinking about this while TED thing and, I would like to continue this idea of studying the city, that all large cities contain certain traits that they all share, like a template. Early days but I’m gonna continue studying the Urban Psychology book, and make a proper fist of the Golden Theory stuff and see how much it relates to what I am looking at at the moment. I’m gonna take images of the ‘flashpoints’ of Edinburgh city centre, do the same for Berlin, and try and get through to London/Newcastle/Dundee if and when possible through the summer to further the drawings I hope to make on this subject……………………..

…TED…
26/05/2008
Hello people.
www.ted.com
Ideas worth spreading…..so I’m told, I’m a sucker for a hard sell
At the moment, its early days, but I’m pretty drawn to the architectural stuff, the idea of ‘the sustainable city’. I think that, for this anyway, its probably best to stay somewhat within what I’m comfortable in, seen as how I’m not really gonna have any, well, guidance I s’pose. I’m still reeling slightly from my ESW stuff and I kinda wanna put it right…
At the moment I like this guy, but I think a lot of thats got to do with him being a bit rolly polly and singing a wee song at the end…

I like the idea of the transportational systems being amalgamated and developed into one system. `I’m not entirely sure how much I can be ‘inspired’ by the talk, the brief was pretty vague, so I don’t know if I can arrive with a number of drawings that are vaguely representative of what he talks about, in that its architectureal, line based, urban, and city development….but I’m not sure.
I’l keep looking…..

Like this guy, he is, at the heart of it, talking about ways around problems in the most direct way he can think of. Everything seems to be very efficient, multi functional and useful in as many ways as is practical to the object…
Theres maybe something in that……

Right….
25/05/2008
After a fairly long absence, I have, now that its all over(unnoficially), decided to take it all up again and overhall this mother and make it slightly more viewable and, y’know, actually post on it regularly again.
Rather ironically, the only reason I havent is cause the thought of the amount of work I had to do to get it back up to snuff put me off so, in order to bypass this little issue, I have decided to not….
Well, Im gonna ignore everything up until the most recent stuff from the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop exhibition that we just opened last Friday.
Im probably gonna start deletin pages and stuff over the next few weeks as well cause, well, I’m good like that.
And also gonna update regular over the summer, chronicling my TED project……good times…….
Anyways, hope everyones good….
Gotta be honest, Im slightly embarassed by it, I know its probably my best so far in terms of work done outside of drawing, but still, I dunno, it just really doesnt sit well with me, I s’pose it dont really help that it was in amongst some really spot on stuff as well.
I guesse its mainly because Im so comfortable in the style of drawing, and feel confident enough in the mark making that as soon as I move it out into a different realm I wuss out and get all precious. I feel like I know what I was trying to do, but clearly didnt pull it off. All in all, its kinda botherin me….
The most annoying thing about the whole thing is theres shit all I can do about it now. Ah well, onwards and, well, mainly just onwards for the time being….
Cheers again.
Nod
